Great and underappreciated cars, but they will ruin you if they’re neglected. The engines are strong but tend to leak at the rear of the heads when they have some miles on them. Proper repair involves drilling, retapping and Heli-Coiling all 32 or so head bolt holes, because the aluminum block will not accept retorquing on the original threads. That operation takes 8 hours in and of itself, once the engine is out and heads off. That’s one of the last Bosch K-Jet injection cars that was on the market, and it’s a great system, but parts are becoming very expensive, and people who know how to work on it are scarce. The intake manifold is two pieces and almost every one of these engines I see has vacuum leaks at the eight sleeves between the two halves, which causes a rough idle that can prevent it from passing smog.

The 722.3 trans is also strong if properly serviced, which should be done every 30k, but they don’t often make it past 200k.

The suspension is simple but time consuming to rebuild if it has bad bushings, the AC controls are often troublesome at this age, and damn near every body function is vacuum controlled so be ready for some fun tracking down leaks.

Do your homework and have one looked at by a specialist before you buy it.

Don’t know anything about them myself, but good timing cos next weeks episode of Wheeler Dealers is one of these!

Lovely cars though, always thought they are sooo classy looking.

Wheeler Dealers did one of those on this week’s episode. They took one with a tired engine and suspension and made it an AMG replica. They seem like cool old cars.
